This refers to the write up (Bane and boon: Traffic & Vegetarianism) of Sashi Tharoor Sunday Times of India,(09.12.07) New Delhi. It made an interesting and a serious reading. His traffic experience last year in Kolkata is a common fact in most of the Indian cities. Even in spite of the mushrooming growth of the flyovers this problem is still existing and increasing day by day. The Indian travelers are caught in the web of traffic jam. Unfortunately in most cases it''s not the space constrains matters but our attitude towards the traffic rules matters most. Our sheer negligence towards the rules makes chaos in our city roads. The main reason for a rise in such type of incidents is the lack of proper supervision of traffic movement.
Trucks, taxies, autos, and Road Transport Corporation buses keep taking wrong turns at small crossings. Cars can be seen overtaking each other; Scooter, bike and auto drivers are not bothered about the inconvenience they cause to pedestrians when they zigzag through roads. The cyclists too contribute to the chaos. The rickshaw-pullers are the biggest nuisance. Some of them, raw from the village, don’t care whether other on the road slip, fall or crash as a result of their unpredictable acrobatics. They presume that others on the road would see them coming and adjust their speed or movement accordingly. Then there is yet another problem that is of stray cattle and dogs. The cowherds are least bothered. Cops in some cases utilize this opportunity to make easy dough. What is most needed is an integrated traffic drive that should cover all vehicles users including, rickshaws cycles and even pedestrians. Andhra Pradesh government’s recently introduced interceptors –to track down the vehicles violating speed limit is a welcome step. In most of the accidents many a time the speed is the killer. As the saying goes “speed thrills but kills too”, is often neglected by these violators. Yet another major cause of accidents is the use of mobile while driving. In cities especially car users are very much addicted to this menace. Even in spite of strict punishments car users are still not bothered. A law against this practice should implement very strictly in our city roads. Alas, we are yet to learn the basic civic sense in relation to traffic from our western counter parts. pvariel@gmail.com
